this is definitely true, kung fu or any martial art for that matter is not just about fight or defending yourself. It is a philosophy, a higher understanding of how everything works. Mastering your mind and spirit is harder than mastering your body..

Agree completely with above comment.. this just might be the most underrated film of all time. the message transcends anything I've seen on film. Alone it encapsulates the wisdom of many of the finest epics.
Here is a fascinating interpretation of the film, scene by scene, which I strongly recommend:
http://jahtruth.net/flute.htm
I would not be surprised if this film steadily grows in popularity and becomes one of the most meaningful works of the 20th century.

from the teachings of Lao Tzu:

Nothing in the world
is as soft and yielding as water.
Yet for dissolving the hard and inflexible,
nothing can surpass it.

The soft overcomes the hard;
the gentle overcomes the rigid.
Everyone knows this is true,
but few can put it into practice.

This film does.

The vary 1st time I ever head of David Carradine was my Grandma. She told me about a show called "Kung Fu" & said I mite like it. I found out that it came on TNT so I watched it. The next day she asked me if I liked it & I told her that I loved it. After that I tryed 2 find out as much as I could about David Carradine, I bought all his books, movies, ect.. & was shocked 2 find out that he passed a way the same month my boyfrind did a year before. it hit me hard because I use to write to David ( in letters) & I still have some of the letters he wrote me. He was like the grandfather I never had. I will miss him so much but he will always be in my heart & I always have his letters 2 hold when I am feeling down.

For me at least - one of my top 10 films of all time - and for some unknown reason completely underrated. I am writing this in September 2010 as I have been carrying out a quick search on the Silent Flute - and Jeff Cooper (Cord). Surprisingly it looks like a new version of the Silent Flute is to be made - excellent!! Also looks like it is virtually impossible to find anything about Jeff Cooper - amazing. Congratulations Jeff on managing to keep such a low profile in this electronic age - that really is quite some achievement!! Whatever the critics have to say about your acting in the Silent Flute Jeff, I thought it fitted the role perfectly - great performance.

I have only read this far into the chronicles and already I am coming away with tools to help me along my path. I have been a student of kung fu for 16 years and am now learning Tai Chi. These snippets of wisdom are just what I needed.

David, you left us too soon. Much too soon.

He was a really good writer. I met him once in Spartanburg SC when he came to the theatre to sing for the Cancer (or maybe it was Heart) foundation. That was way back in about 1973 or 74. I had a HUGE crush on him. I went up the stage to take a picture of him and he followed me all the way back to my seat in the back of the theatre while he was singing. I reached out and touched his left arm with my right hand. lol And my husband took a picture.

Good reading... got loads of insights here... funny but David had left a lot of people missing him and we haven't even met him personally and even haven't watched most of his films. Such great impact he has left to people across the globe.

Two minutes of fighting in a hour-long show? Wow, times have really changed. Even Pokemon has more violence than that.
